I'm in the early stage of planning a significant trip with my parents and I'm here for some advice.
So we're hoping to sail on our Catalina 40 from Washington state all the way down to Mexico. My dad and I've been sailing for a while, but never on a trip of this magnitude, so I want to make sure I'm as prepared as possible.
I've been on a smaller boat in Mexico, so I've gotten a taste of the customs and port procedures down there. While that was a great learning experience, I know that sailing the open Pacific on a Catalina 40 would be a different endeavor! My ASA certifications have given me a solid foundation, but I recognize this trip is a huge step up, and I want to be as prepared as possible for whatever the open ocean might throw our way.
Generally, I want to ask what to expect and how to get ready, but I'm particularly interested in things like necessary upgrades for a Catalina 40, essential safety gear and procedures for a journey of this scale, and how to best plan my route and prepare for weather along the way.
I'm an eager learner and ready to put in the work to get myself, my family and our boat ready. I'm all ears for any and all advice, tips, or anecdotes you might have about sailing this route. Really thanks in advance!
